An estimated 80 of urban areas struggle with this issue, necessitating a total construction of approximately two billion new homes over the next 75 years 2, which equates to an average need for nearly 96,000 affordable dwellings constructed dly.
In tackling this complex global housing crisis intertwined with climate change and biodiversity loss, sustnable development offers a pathway towards addressing these interrelated issues. The construction sector plays a pivotal role by either exacerbating the problem or serving as its solution through adopting transformative measures.
The Sustnable and Affordable Housing report challenges the conventional notion that achieving both sustnability and affordability is an exclusive mass market strategy. Proven solutions are already avlable to address the housing needs across the globe, as exemplified in five regional case studies from Kenya, Nepal, Philippines, and more. This publication advocates for a unified vision of sustnable affordable housing worldwide, showcasing successful strategies with the potential for greater impact.
